The Work on the Ring Road program is fully committed to more and better bicycle infrastructure through safe cycle paths and comfortable bicycle bridges and tunnels. This will allow quick and easy cycling along and across the Ring. The construction of the F204 bicycle highway is part of this ambition.
Along the E411, across the regional borders, the existing cycle path will be transformed into a bicycle highway. The existing cycle path today is uninviting, it has major elevation changes, it is very narrow and it is located right next to highway traffic without any shielding. Realizing the F204 will resolve these thorny issues and allow for safe and easy bike traffic between Brussels and Wallonia.
Construction of the bicycle highway will take place in several phases:
The section between Jezus-Eik and Joseph Kumpsstraat will be the first to be completed. This section runs along the south side of the E411, the side where the bicycle highway has the least impact on nature and where elevation changes are minimal. Bicycle bridges will be constructed at the crossings with Frans Verbeekstraat and Paardenwater for safe and easy cycling. Some incisions and fillings to the terrain will also be made in the Nieuwland segment to establish slopes of less than 4%.
In Phase 2, the bicycle highway will continue along the south side of the E411 from Joseph Kumpsstraat, across the Maleizen complex to the Walloon Region border.
Also, the section from Jezus-Eik toward Brussels will continue to be built up to ADEPS. At the Dry Borren eco-viaduct, a connection will be made with the existing cycle path towards Brussels. In anticipation of the complete redesign of the Leonard traffic junction, this junction will be crossed through the existing bicycle tunnel to the south. The thorough redesign of the Leonard intersection is part of the redesign of the R0 East and is therefore done through an integrated planning process using a regional spatial implementation plan (RSIP).
