The Ring around Brussels is being given a new lease of life, with full commitment to the mobility of the future and to improving the quality of life for people and animals around the Ring Road. In September 2019, De Werkvennootschap published a vision statement ‘Program Work on the Ring Road‘. This was the start of a great story.
The Work on the Ring Road program takes a multimodal approach to improving infrastructure for all road users. This means that the focus is on road traffic and public transport, as well as pedestrians and cyclists. Hoppin points, which combine different modes of transport in one physical location, are also being realized in different locations. There is also a commitment to improving the region’s quality of life by investing in the built spaces where we live, work and relax. The green-blue network is to be simultaneously restored and, where possible, improved.
The Ring Road R0 is divided into 3 project areas: R0 North, R0 East and R0 South-West. Ring East is the part of the Ring Road that includes four major traffic junctions along the R0 and E411: Vierarmen, Leonard, Groenendaal and Jezus-Eik. These 4 traffic junctions are located in the middle or at the edge of the Sonian Forest. A regional spatial implementation plan (RSIP) is required for the redesign of the junctions. The preparation of this plan requires a long-term process, which is currently underway. In addition to these complex projects, there are a few projects within the R0 East project area that can be realized more quickly, which are so-called quick wins. Some of these are currently underway and SBE is proudly working on them
The joint venture Zoniën Mobiel (SBE – Omgeving – Ney & Partners – D+A – Mint – Hesselteer) is responsible for the complete study of all engineering structures and associated road designs. The partnership is currently hard at work on the following subprojects:
