The Work on the Ring Road program is fully committed to more and better bicycle infrastructure through safe cycle paths and comfortable bicycle bridges and tunnels. This will allow quick and easy cycling along and across the Ring. The construction of the F205 bicycle highway is part of this ambition.
Along the busy Terhulpsesteenweg (N275), the existing cycle path will be transformed into a bicycle highway. The road will be replaced with new car lanes with a wide and safe cycle path next to it. The road must be completely redeveloped for this reason, which is done in two major sections. The northern section, between Brussels and the R0, was completed in January 2022. The bicycle highway is separated from the roadway by wooden crash barriers with integrated lighting.
Along the southern side of the road, between the R0 and the Walloon border, the bicycle highway will be extended towards Terhulpen. From the regional border, the Walloon government takes over responsibility for the seamless continuation of this bicycle highway.
Near the Groenendaal station, a bicycle tunnel is being built under the Brussels-Ottignies railway line to ensure safe and easy flow. The bicycle tunnel is part of the redevelopment of the Groenendaal station area. The bicycle tunnel will first be constructed at the pre-construction site next to the tracks, after which it will be inserted under the railway line in the fall of 2023.
Insertion of the bicycle tunnel
This tunnel was pre-constructed next to the tracks in recent months, and during the weekend of September 9 and 10, the bicycle tunnel was inserted in place under the train tracks. These works involved tight schedule and ambitious planning. This complex work was successfully completed in a single weekend in order to minimize disruption to train passengers during the work week:
First, the tracks were completely removed.
In a next step, the space for the tunnel was excavated.
In the following step, the tunnel was inserted.
Then, the construction pit was backfilled.
Finally, the tracks were put back in place.

Did you know that…
This operation is quite unique? Normally, such tunnels are inserted under two tracks. Although only two tracks are in service, this tunnel was inserted at one time over a width of four tracks. This means that the earthmoving required was nearly double the normal volume, which made it a real challenge to get everything done within the time frame of one weekend. The limited working space, with a platform and overhead line structures near the insertion location, increased the complexity of this operation.
The tunnel shaft was moved a total of 40.6 m during the insertion operation? After insertion, the tunnel mouths will be further finished (2.5 m long on each side, just outside the tracks), which would make the tunnel 29.75 m long in total.
The inserted section is 24.75 m long, 8.84 m wide and 4 m high and weighs 887 tons?

The Ring around Brussels is being given a new lease of life, with full commitment to the mobility of the future and to improving the quality of life for people and animals around the Ring Road. In September 2019, De Werkvennootschap published a vision statement ‘Program Work on the Ring Road’. This was the start of a great story.
The construction of the Welriekendedreef bicycle ramp is part of the ambition to cycle quickly, easily and above all safely along and across the Ring. The existing pedestrian tunnel under the Ring, at the end of Welriekendedreef, will therefore be rebuilt into a gentle bicycle ramp.
The construction of bicycle highway F204, parallel to the E411, provides a direct connection between Brussels and the Walloon border towards Wavre. The bicycle highway thereby provides a safe cycle path and safe route.
Following the Overijse municipal master plan, the approach to the Jezus-Eik village center is an initial important step. The ambition here is to transform Jezus-Eik into a gateway to the Sonian Forest.
The construction of bicycle highway F29 will provide a fast, safe and comfortable connection between Brussels, Tervuren and Leuven. We connect nearby neighborhoods through the future bicycle highway and build bicycle tunnels and bridges to avoid dangerous crossings with pedestrians, cars and public transportation.
Several bicycle highways run to and from Brussels. These are cycle routes that connect Brussels to cities at a distance of 15 to 20 km away from the capital. We are working on additional bicycle connections such as the Ring Cycle path, which follows the course of the Ring around Brussels (R0), to enable bike traffic between these bicycle highways.
Currently, the possibilities for building a cycling route between Wezembeek-Oppem and Brussels are still being studied. The cycling route should connect Brussels to bicycle highway F29 (Tervuren-Leuven).
