The Work on the Ring Road program is fully committed to more and better bicycle infrastructure through safe cycle paths and comfortable bicycle bridges and tunnels. This will allow quick and easy cycling along and across the Ring. The construction of the Welriekendedreef bicycle ramp is part of this ambition.
Welriekendedreef is a tree-lined road on the edge of the Sonian Forest. It forms the border between the Brussels Capital Region and the Flemish Region. The existing pedestrian tunnel under the Ring at the end of this road in Overijse used to be only accessible by stairs. This is absolutely impractical for cyclists and wheelchair users. For that reason, part of the stairs will be rebuilt into a gentle bicycle ramp, which blends into the green surroundings. This will allow cyclists to use the tunnel easily without having to get off their bikes.
During the works, preservation of the existing central tunnel section under the Ring, the proximity of the precious forest area of the Sonian Forest and a gas pipeline all increased the complexity of these works.
On the other side of Welriekendedreef, a bicycle bridge will be built that will create a connection to the center of Jezus-Eik. This bicycle bridge is part of the “redesign of Jezus-Eik village center” project.
