The Work on the Ring Road program is fully committed to more and better bicycle infrastructure through safe and comfortable bicycle bridges, paths and tunnels. This will allow quick and easy cycling along and across the Ring. Construction of the F29 bicycle highway and the new bicycle and pedestrian bridge over the Vierarmen intersection is part of this large-scale project.
The bicycle highway is divided into several zones:
The forest cycle path between the Ring and the Brussels Region border was in poor condition, it was not wide enough and there was no lighting. In the summer of 2022, the cycle path was redeveloped with permeable hardening that is accessible to bicycles. That way, it fits nicely into the adjacent Sonian Forest.

The Vierarmen intersection was too dangerous for cyclists: by building a new bicycle bridge, we are creating a safe crossing at the intersection. Fun fact: this bicycle bridge is made entirely of wood, and it is the first wooden bicycle bridge of this size in Flanders.
The Plateau Route continues to be built between Tervuursesteenweg, the Duisburg Plateau, Koning Boudewijnlaan and the Ring of Leuven. As a cyclist, you do not only get an impressive view of the region as the bicycle highway passes over the Duisburg plateau, but it also becomes a lot safer as there are few crossings with motorized traffic. The surrounding agricultural area and the various users on this route (agricultural vehicles, riders on horseback and cyclists) are taken into account as much as possible. Some intersections will be realigned and the route will be hardened only where necessary.
The Plateau Route was divided into several zones.
In the first “Tervurenlaan – Park Tervuren” zone, Broekstraat will be made more bicycle-friendly. Kastanjedreef is also being redesigned so that motorized traffic is slowed down. In Park van Tervuren, Spaans Huisdreef will be hardened, taking into account the park environment and shared use between pedestrians and cyclists.
In the center of Duisburg, speed-reducing measures are being implemented (central islands with trees) and the environment is being adapted for cyclists and pedestrians. Resurfacing of footpaths, introduction of longitudinal parking and increasing the quality of cycle paths should create a greener and safer center.
Fast connections are created along Weebergbos, from Plateau Duisburg to the Neerijse Steenweg intersection. Safety measures are also being implemented at the intersection with Neerijse Steenweg. The intersection of Bredeweg and Delle with Blokkenstraat in Bertem will be given a new speed hump with retarders for motorized traffic.
There will also be a new bicycle bridge over the E40 near Bredeweg. The bicycle highway follows the bend from the E40 to the E314 and will have walls to shield cyclists from traffic.
A bicycle bridge will also be provided across Termunckdreef so that you can easily move across the bicycle highway without having to stop for cross traffic. There will be a bicycle tunnel under Sint-Jansbergsesteenweg, with local connections to the bicycle highway.
On Gaston Geenslaan, the existing cycle path will be widened. A new bicycle and pedestrian tunnel will be built under Celestijnenlaan. You can also easily transfer to the bus at that location. The bicycle highway continues and finally joins the existing cycle paths of the Ring around Leuven at Stadspoort Bodart.
