Rijkswaterstaat is carrying out an extensive renovation of the Koninginnen lock (Koninginnensluis). Following various works in recent years, the bridges, operation and control systems, the bottom and walls, and the safety around this historic lock complex are now being thoroughly addressed.
The Koninginnensluis is located in the municipality of Nieuwegein (NL) and separates the Merwedekanaal from the Lek. The lock complex was opened in 1892 by queens Emma and Wilhelmina and consists of two successive lock chambers and two movable bridges. The lock chambers and the Emmabrug are designated as “Rijksmonument” (listed monuments).
Given the increasing traffic on both bridges and the age of the lock complex, the structure requires renovation. Given the monumental nature of the complex, and with a view to sustainability and efficiency, renovation solutions for the entire complex are being sought in this project..
Rijkswaterstaat aims to manage the project’s risks with a two-phase approach. In the first preparatory phase, Rijkswaterstaat and Heijmans jointly create the design. SBE provides support to its customer Heijmans Infra in this process.
SBE subjects the movement mechanism, bridges, lock gates, and civil structures to a new calculation (including fatigue) and lifespan analysis. Based on this analysis, a renovation concept is developed in consultation with the client Rijkswaterstaat, which combines cultural-historical value with the technical requirements of today. For this renovation, SBE works out the preliminary and final designs, with a focus on circularity and material reuse.
