The Oosteroever project is located to the east of the outer port of Ostend and serves as an important link between land and sea at a landscape level. This area provides a potential framework for future urban developments and innovations. The main goal of this assignment was to explore the insights and interests of the involved stakeholders and then translate them into a cohesive design vision.
The project area is currently characterized primarily by its large amount of paved surfaces. The existing materials and design contribute to the barrier effect between the new residential areas on Oosteroever and the dune area along the North Sea.
The intended redesign of the public space aims to break through the existing separation function. This area will have the potential to serve as a connecting point between the urban and natural environments. To achieve this, landscape connections will be established with the existing open space, the dunes, and the beach zone. Between these connections, high-quality rest areas will be integrated for walkers and passersby.

To optimize accessibility, further efforts will focus on improving recreational routes, giving pedestrians and cyclists a clearly prominent role in the streetscape. However, access to various businesses will still be guaranteed for motorized traffic, with different modes of transport being separated where necessary.
In terms of sustainability and climate resilience, excessive paving will be replaced by high-quality green areas, enhancing water infiltration and reducing the heat effect of the paved surfaces.
