The Albert Canal is the most important waterway in Flanders thanks to the rapidly growing container traffic over the past decade. Vlaamse Waterweg nv is therefore investing in the further expansion of this waterway to meet the requirements of a European principal waterway. The current clearance height and width under the bridges forms a funnel neck for inland navigation.

The adjustments are therefore twofold:

  • The bridges will have a clearance height of up to 9.1 metres in order to allow container ships with 4 container layers to pass through smoothly and safely. In this way, transport by inland navigation is stimulated, which benefits mobility.
  • The narrowing of the canal will be removed to a passage width of 86 metres.

This major infrastructure project was divided up per bridge. SBE’s many years of expertise in the field of bridge construction, both in the design, execution and assembly phases, enabled various bridges to be designed smartly and safely positioned.

Road and tram bridge Noorderlaan Antwerp

he first bridges to be tackled within this Master Plan are the Noorderlaan bridges in Antwerp. By working in phases, any inconvenience caused to road and waterway users was minimised. The new Noorderlaan bridge consists of 2 separate bridges: one for car traffic and one for public transport. Both bridges are mixed steel concrete bridges with steel substructures, which rest on 6 steel pillars.

    Steel arched bridge in Grobbendonk

In 2007, the concrete bridge over the Albert Canal in Grobbendonk was severely damaged as a result of a collision. Consequently, the bridge was no longer able to carry the loads from the downstream side, which meant that road traffic had to pass in turn, travelling along one lane.

    Steel arched bridge Viersel

Also in this project, the bridge in Viersel will be renewed in order to achieve a headway of 9.1 metres and the canal will be widened to 86 metres. SBE’s expertise was called upon by contractor Victor Buyck Steel Construction nv to bring this project to a successful conclusion. Various aspects needed to be addressed: demolishing the existing bridge, building the new abutment and a new steel bridge, adapting to the roadway so that it connects to the new bridge, and finally the construction of new bank defences.
