Maasvlakte 2 is an example of innovative and sustainable port development in Rotterdam. In order to respond to the rapidly growing offshore wind industry, a new terminal was built here with a total surface area of 42 hectares. This made it possible to expand the production and storage capacity of giant foundation piles of wind turbines (monopiles) for new wind farms at sea.

MariTeam was responsible for the design of the entire quay infrastructure: a 500m deep-sea quay, an inland shipping quay wall and 2 berths (including dredging and shore and soil protection).

One of the largest quay walls in the world

With a retaining height of 30m, the deep-sea quay can be considered one of the largest quay walls in the world. The dimensions assumed by the quay wall are close to the limits of what is possible.

The ‘manufacturability’ aspect therefore had to be constantly tested during the design. SBE’s specific expertise was necessary to bring the complex design to a successful conclusion

Pioneering work

The project team soon came across a lack of guidelines for the design of a quay wall that would allow jack-up vessels. We had to adopt a pioneering approach. A comprehensive monitoring system was used to monitor and analyse starting points in order to set up practical guidelines for future projects. And all this was completed within a tight time-frame of barely 5 months from preliminary design to tender offer. During the execution of the works, SBE was involved as an operations department, which provided us with a wealth of practical knowledge.

    Port of Rotterdam

The port of Rotterdam is the largest seaport in Europe. Together with MariTeam, a joint venture of SBE, MUC and Iv-Infra, the Port of Rotterdam Authority has found a partner for the design of its water-bound infrastructure, such as (deep sea) quay walls and jetties. SBE’s experience and technical expertise in the field of hydraulic engineering came in very handy for such complex realisations that were under intense time pressure.

    HES Hartel Tank Terminal

The HES Hartel Tank Terminal (HHTT) is a tank terminal being developed for the storage and trans-shipment of oil products and biofuels on the Hartel strip, on the south side of the Mississippi port on the Maasvlakte. The total site covers an area of 28 hectares.

    Quay walls port of Amalia

The Port of Rotterdam Authority is working for its customers Rotterdam World Gateway and APM Terminals on the expansion of the quay walls for these container terminals. This extension involves the construction of a deep-sea quay wall with a length of almost 3km and accompanying crane track.
