The historic Lys Bridge that spanned the Roeselare-Lys canal in Ingelmunster was in a state of disrepair. Following a thorough inspection that uncovered problems such as rusting and wear and tear, it was decided to replace the bridge in 2021.
The new bridge for cyclists and pedestrians will have an elegant appearance with a steel framework structure that extends between supports over a total distance of about 63 meters (69 yards). The bridge deck will have a width of 3.7 meters (12’1”). Two V-shaped piers support the bridge and visually merge with the framework.
Smart bike loop designs are used on both banks to make the best use of the space available, while making the inclines as gradual as possible. The bike loops include light railings, start and stopping lanes, and rest areas with less steep inclines. The northern bank, which is in an area that is susceptible to flooding, has been designated as a park, so it was decided to install access ramps on pillars. The space between different elements will be newly planted to restore the park-like character. An access ramp will be combined with an embankment on the southern bank. Green strips will also be created here.
Users will get a great view of the canal from the bike loops and the bridge. Pedestrians will have access to the bridge by stairs constructed between the V-shaped piers. A footpath will be constructed on the south bank in addition to the access ramp to allow safe crossing from Zuidkaai to Vaarstraat.
The infrastructure in the area will also be modified to improve traffic safety. Safe connections will be created with the existing cycle paths. Suggestion lanes for cyclists will be installed along Kanaalstraat on both sides.
The bridge is financed by De Vlaamse Waterweg nv. The municipality of Ingelmunster is responsible for the area of trees that will be replaced. The project is part of the Flanders Seine-Scheldt-inland navigation project, which is supported by the European Union..
