A new lock is being built on the Farakka dam diverting canal in Murshidabad, India. The Farakka dam was built over the River Ganges with the intention to divert the water from the river to Bhagirathi. The significant difference between the water level upstream of the dam and the desired water level in the canal needed to be bridged with a lock to enable navigation.
The existing lock had become unusable over the years and therefore had to be replaced by a new lock, which was built parallel to the existing lock. The construction of the new lock is part of the ‘Jal Marg Vikas’ (National Waterway-1) project, financed by the World Bank. SBE was appointed as the international locks expert by Larsen & Toubro Engineering and Construction Company (LNTECC) under an EPC (Engineer, Procure and Construct) agreement with the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI).
As part of this project, SBE acted to design the lock and provide the detailed design of the hydro-mechanical components, such as the point and sector doors, the lock and quay wall equipment (bollards, fenders, etc.), the electromechanical control systems and the hydro-electric drive systems of the lock. In addition, SBE’s practical expertise was also deployed in guiding the client in the tendering and execution phase.
