The “canal of the historic center” is a historic canal that was built at the start of the 19th and 20th centuries, which is today only used for heritage and tourism purposes. The project area for the replacement of the “Pont Capitte” is included in a UNESCO perimeter, of which the monuments and elements of heritage importance must be taken into consideration in the architectural and urban design. The road over the bridge, by contrast, is a key gateway to the city of La Louvière.
The objectives of replacing the Pont Capitte include creating adapted and therefore wider areas for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as integration of a separate bus lane on the bridge. The heritage of the historic canal in the center also needs to be enhanced by strengthening the connection to the water and its banks, which is to be complemented by rows of trees. Access ramps to the (existing) bridge will be removed to improve the living environment for residents. The overall design will be given an exceptional architectural value that allows it to be integrated harmoniously into the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The architectural approach to the bridge focuses on a simple, clean and pure architecture, which is incorporated into the green landscape. All parts of the bridge should be designed as a cohesive whole to meet this vision.
