“Van kleins af aan wou ek weet hoe die wêreld werk.”

Since June 2024, Theo has been strengthening the SBE team as a Project Engineer in Concrete. Originally from South Africa, he found his way to the engineering firm through a friend who was already working at SBE. “I already knew a few other South Africans at SBE. That gave me an immediate sense of familiarity,” he says.

Theo’s fascination with construction started early. “Ever since I was little, I’ve been captivated by everything from tiny houses to massive bridges. I’ve always been intrigued by how the world works.” That curiosity, combined with a love for mathematics and a strong analytical mindset, led him to pursue a degree in engineering.

He describes his start at SBE as very smooth. “Everything went really well. Everyone here is kind and supportive. What stands out to me is that it truly feels like a family, you feel at home quickly.” Theo looks forward to collaborating with colleagues each day and tackling the technical challenges his work brings.

“No two projects are the same. Boredom doesn’t stand a chance.”

Theo works on a variety of projects, such as bridges and buildings. One project in particular stands out for him: Oosterweel R1 North. “This project has left the biggest impression on me because I was able to collaborate with so many colleagues. It’s truly a team effort.”

His favorite part of the job? “Building and checking analytical models. That’s where I can really apply my passion for maths and engineering.” At the same time, he finds it a challenge to come up with not just theoretical but also practical solutions.

Aside from the technical side, Theo also appreciates the social aspect at SBE.“The boat trip on the Scheldt this summer was a highlight. It was great to spend so much time with colleagues and get to know them better.” Of course, there was also a funny twist: “A colleague who had cycled to the starting point arrived a bit late, so the boat had to turn around to pick him up. Luckily, we had only just left!”

If Theo had to describe SBE in one word, it would be ‘family’. He would absolutely recommend the engineering firm to friends and acquaintances. His advice to new starters is clear: “Moet nie huiwer om vrae te vra nie. Jou kollegas is daar om jou te help.” (“Don’t hesitate to ask questions. Your colleagues are there to help you.”)

With the ambition to grow into a senior project engineer, Theo sees a bright future at SBE, where he can continue to develop his technical skills in a warm and supportive environment.
